March 11, 2024 – Zentangling

Today we talked about the upcoming show on March 23rd and ensured we had all the supplies we need and people signed up to show.

Then we watched a short video about starting to Zentangle and then jumped right in! Kimmer had an appointment but came after that and talked about her journey with Zentangle and how she started out with a journal, pen and just doing something every day and learning patterns. Her acrylic paintings often have some Zentangle elements in them and they add depth and interest to areas that may otherwise go unnoticed.

With a few books and the video we all started creating and learning some of the steps. Mary also has done a fair bit of Zentangle work, as has Lisa, so we showed some of what we have done as well. Everyone enjoyed this open studio day, although Terri didn’t really get time to try her hand at it. Hopefully next season Vicki, a Certified Zentangle Artist, may be back and can do a full session with us! Here are some photos and comments for you to enjoy:

Mary was away on vacation for a couple weeks, but took some supplies with her and she did these amazing rocks! The left one is a conglomerate rock with Oyster shells grown into it, that she enhanced with paint and mandala dotting. The red and black rock had many holes in it that Mary said just screamed little rocks in them, and she embellished them all with paint and mandala dotting. The three Zentangles in the right photo are some that Lisa has done, which are destined for her granddaughter’s walls.

On the left are some of Mary’s Zentangle tiles that she’s done and made notes on the back, she’s hoping to eventually frame them as a collection. The middle photo with the Ferris Wheel, Roller Coaster and Carousel, is by Ray that she started in preparation for this session. On the right is an adorable Kitty that Lynn’s sister, Jennifer, started. You’ll see some more progression on her piece further down this page.

Lynn working on her Fishie Zentangles, Lisa’s organic shaped project, and Brenda working on a Peacock. Guess what colour she adds later?!

On the left is Brenda’s step-daughter Denise, working on a Mandala themed Zentangle, more on her progress later too! Then Mary who chose a black tile and white pens and pencils to do her take on the short video we watched. Then on the right is Jan’s representation of the Zentangle that we watched in the video. So much variation but all great!

Jennifer’s kitty progressing, Denise and Brenda both working on a second tangle!

Mary, Lisa and Ray busy at work!

Brenda and Denise’s progress, look at those colours! Olivia’s Flapper in progress, those lashes!

Kimmer arrived and talked about her Zentangle journey. This is a Yaqui Deer Dancer in progress to go with the one she brought last week. You can see her faint pencil lines for the basic shape and then she’s started to infill with Zentangle designs. Can’t wait to see it finished! Kimmer also brought her life-long friend, Robin, who is visiting her. She is an artist as well and had a career as a Graphic Artist to our meeting. It was so nice to meet all of our guests today, Robin, Jennifer and Denise!

Kimmer also just finished another Seguro y Sana dolphin. Look at the cool fades, Zentangling and the underside is so cool! This will be a great addition to the fundraising for Seguro y Sana project!

Next week we’ll finalize plans for the March 23 show and have a Demo by Cindy. Bring your Tangles to show too!
