Jossana’s Color Theory class was great and we all enjoyed the presentation and mixing paint!
A big thank you to Josanna who had a well thought-out presentation and many great slides, which are presented below. Next week, Feb 23 we will be putting this to good use and creating a painting using the Zorn limited palette technique.

Here we did the exercises using the original red-yellow-blue color theory, and the newer post-industrial-revolution cyan-magenta-yellow color theory (think the colors you get in your printer). We all had various results because we were using different brands, mediums and also different colors as we did not all have the cyan-magenta-yellow palette available to us, but we all got the basic understanding of how the new palette can create more vibrant, less muddy and dark, mixed colors.

Finally, Jossana demonstrated and we mixed colors using a limited pallette, called the Zorn palette. It uses only 4 colors and you can achieve nearly the whole spectrum of color you want.
She also taught skin tone theory using the Zorn palette, and it really works well to get realistic tones! That’s what next week will be about!

The final photo of the squares of color demonstrates the use of the Zorn palette and all the colors you can make with just red, yellow ochre, black and white.
And here is the reference piece for next week’s class putting Josanna’s color theory class and the Zorn palette to use:

This was the information to prepare for Josanna’s color theory class:
The Setup
To make the presentation easier to follow, she is planning to use the TV to connect to my iPad. She will also be bringing oils and acrylics to do some live color-mixing demonstrations.
Materials List
Everyone is welcome to use their preferred medium, but for the best results, she highly recommend having the following colors:
- Primary/Essential: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black, and White.
- Additional: Red, Ultramarine Blue, and Yellow Ochre.
- Supports: Any surface you like (watercolor paper, canvas block, or regular board).
Note: There will be have extra oils and acrylics on hand just in case anyone needs them! “
Excited yet? We sure are! See y’all Monday.
Out of courtesy for the presenter, PLEASE arrive in enough time to be settled and ready to begin promptly at 9.
