Back to Basics – Drawing Practice – Jan 26, 2026

We took a week off after the show on the 17th & 18th due to a Tecalai meeting on the 19th our regular meeting day.

So this week we had an in-depth discussion about the show and made a few decisions about the March show and next January’s show. Given lower attendance on the Sunday and at least 80+% of the sales happened on the Saturday we’ve decided to have a one-day show next January instead of two.

This discussion took up a good hour of our meeting and then we moved on to Drawing Basics.

But before we started that we had a couple items that Karen and Kimmer brought to share.

Karen had been in a bit of a rut or something and decided to watch a video or two to loosen up her work. She brought two pieces that she said were completed in about an hour to hour-and-a-half each that were a view west from the Estuary at San Francisco Beach. The flow and feel of these is great!

Kimmer also brought in a large canvas of a Zentangled Llama for her friend and contractor on their house renovations. She said they’d been to Peru and had fallen in love with Llama’s and had incorporated them into their business logo here in San Carlos. We know that he and his family will love this piece!

Terri brought out the Drawing o the Right Side of the Brain workbook and we did three exercises from the book: 1) draw your hand; 2) upside-down drawing; 3) vase/face drawing; and then fourth and final exercise was a grid exercise wherein we are provided with a jumbled up 35-grided page and we have to transform it square by square to the correct order – the final result represents the famous Girl with a Pearl Earring is an oil painting by Dutch Golden Age painter Johannes Vermeer. All great projects for us to practice on and bring us back to basics!

Next week Doug has agreed to do a lesson on adding relief (texture and depth) to a canvas and either leave it white, or paint it afterwards. He put one of these pieces into the raffle at the recent show and the winner was thrilled with it! I tried to crop a photo from the Art Show with his piece on the raffle table, but it didn’t blow up very well, so I’ve included the whole photo, look for the white piece to the right of my stained glass offering, it is pretty much right in the centre of the photo! Looking forward to trying a new thing!
