Today we started out with some more sharing:

Elaine was busy over the summer! She said with her heart issues that she was having to find a way to be creative while sitting. Elaine has often made her pieces more three dimensional but this series she’s recently done used a new product called Foam Clay which is really very lightweight and doesn’t crack like some of the homemade air dry clay products do.
The series featured earrings or other jewellery items that Elaine has found and incorporated into her paintings. The faces on these pieces were done using a bit of substrate (foam ball) as a starting point and then applied Foam Clay to them to get the features. She also did a couple pots using the Foam Clay. How adorable is that little Chef Piglet!
As usual great work and wonderful way to incorporate found items into your pieces!

Here Elaine is talking about her single earring lady and her process.
Terri then started the watercolor session with us. She talked about the process of painting watercolor on canvas, canvas board, canvas paper, etc. and the issues and solutions that she found with them.

The top painting was Terri’s homework from a couple years ago when we emulated a Master, this was a Georgia O’Keefe Lily. This was done on a canvas board product without treating the board with watercolor ground. She talked about the issues with blending and how the paint reacts so differently on this type of surface. The Giraffe was done on canvas paper, he’s so cute! The donkey was done on a stretched canvas that she treated with watercolour ground.
This is the product that she prefers for preparing canvas to paint watercolor on:

Terri also talked about being able to paint this watercolor ground onto other items, like a yogurt container and then painting it:

We watched a Youtube video by one of Terri’s favourite artists: Karlyn Holman, who passed away a few years ago: “How to prepare your canvass for Watercolor” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sBxZRGF1tg.
She also referred us to another one: “Gallery Painting Flowers over a Gessoed Surface” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLLMTtTOSMI
Terri brought in a few Pointsettia plants for our reference and also showed us the Pointsettia Christmas Card that she’d made a few years ago.

Some worked with that subject matter and others went wild on their own ideas!

A lot of great work by our Members!
We also decided that next week we would work on our still life drawing which Doug will set up for us.
